The name of BECKETT or BECKET is derived from the residence of its first bearers at the beckhead, that is at the source of the beck, beck being the Anglo-Saxon word for brook. The lands of this early English family who first took the surname of Beckett were located around the head of a beck or brook.
Families bearing the surname BECKETT were at an early date located in the English Counties of Somerset, York, Wilts, Cornwall, Norfolk, and Lincoln, as well as in the city and the vicinity of London. They ere for the most part of the yeomanry and landed gentry of Great Britain. (Name of Beckett by Media Research Bureau.)

While I believe I have make the connection back from Samuel Beckett, the pioneer who came from Virginia to Kentucky in the 1790's, probable 1796/97. I believe that Samuel is a son of John Samuel Beckett of Virginia. While I have yet to find a will of John "Samuel" Beckett or Mary Beckett or other documents stating who their children were, I believe I have found several documents that leads one to believe there was this Virginia connection.

Virginia

Frederick County

John Beckett, 17??-1769, married Sarah L. *Glass, 17??-1770, prior to 1750 in  Frederick  County Virginia.  In 1750, Samuel Glass gave John Beckett 150 acre in Frederick County.  John and Sarah L. Beckett had 6 children.  John, their eldest boy, was referred to as Samuel and Robert, the youngest, was referred to as Rob.  In 1762, John gave each of their sons a piece of his farm.  John Samuel and Joseph, sold all the farm back to Robert in 1772.  The two brothers started west.

Children of JOHN and SARAH BECKETT were:

THE BECKETT FAMILY

First generation in Kentucky

  Maysville

Simon Kenton was born in 1755, in the Bull Run Mountains of Prince William County, Virginia. In 1775, he and a companion landed their craft at what was to become Limestone (now Maysville) and headed inland. Kenton was a key figure in opening up and keeping the frontier safer for all of north and central Kentucky. (Insert from Kenton Web Page, Kenton Family Genealogy)

In 1785, Arthur Fox and William Wood acquired 400 acres of land from Kenton and established the town of Washington in honor of the Revolutionary War hero who would later become president of the United States.

Early settlers forged much of the history in this village.

Daniel Boone often stopped on his travels. Harriet Beecher Stowe, while visiting one of her pupils at the Col. Marshal Key Home, witnessed a slave auction in front of the courthouse, and her novel, ''Uncle Tom's Cabin'' reflected that experience.

Washington continued to flourish well into the 1800s. The invention of the steamboat, however, stimulated river trade and Limestone, later renamed Maysville, became a booming riverfront town. Despite opposition from residents in Washington, the county seat was moved to Maysville in 1848. From this early boom in Maysville, French, Irish and German cultural influences can be seen in the architecture throughout the historic district in the downtown area.
