Don't be on the Track Unless you Have Too!

Last winter several railroaders were struck by trains and killed, they were on the tracks, and did not have to be their at the times they were struck.  Just in Rochester, NY there were almost a dozen Non-railroad people killed in the last year alone!  I as do many of my co-workers, am employed by the regulatory agency that oversees the railroad industry, and this message is for your personal safety.  Forget the enforcement issues for a moment.  This is a matter of common sense and good habits.  My toughest assignments are fatality investigations, each fatality represents a personal loss to us.  We are all out here sharing the same risks and problems along the track. We know many of you personally, and you know us.  We have to try by all means to get this message to our friends, railroaders, and not-railroaders, all of you!

DON'T BE ON THE TRACK UNLESS YOU HAVE TOO

If you are not in the track, you won't be hit.  If you are a train watcher, please stay clear of the tracks, and pass this message along to all you come in contact with while observing trains.  For the Railroader, please pay close attention to Two important sections of the Roadway Workers Protection Rule: 49CFR Part 214.311 - Responsibility of employers, and 49CFR Part 214.313 - Responsibility of individual roadway workers.  Above all please remember that a roadway worker shall not foul a track except when necessary for the performance of duty.  Please be careful and have a safe day..
