Job #19    Norfolk Southern Corporation - Mechanical Department Management Trainee #Mechanical
Atlanta, GA; Bellevue, OH; Chattanooga, TN; Roanoke, VA.

Each year Norfolk Southern, which Fortune Magazine named America's Most Admired Railroad in 1997, 1998 and 1999, selects outstanding graduates and undergraduates for its Mechanical Department Management Trainee program. Fall 2000 and Spring 2001 trainee needs are for electrical and mechanical engineers. This year long program encourages the Management Trainee to develop skills , make new contacts and learn about NS mechanical operations. Most importantly, the program bridges the new employee's move from academic theory to corporate real world application - a safety net of learning, rich in diverse experiences, growth and excitement.

Preparation for careers in the Mechanical Department will begin with twelve months of practical, hands-on training conducted at our training center in McDonough, GA and throughout the NS system at both locomotive and car shop facilities. Trainees will gain experience in equipment inspection and repair down to the component level. Trainees will also become familiar with the compliance standards of Norfolk Southern, the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Federal Railroad Administration, and the Association of American Railroads. The salary while in the training program is $43,000 plus bonus potential.

Norfolk Southern is looking for undergraduates with an engineering degree interested in hands-on management and supervision opportunities. Candidates should have academic credentials, strong communication skills, and a background that displays leadership and teamwork. Trainees must have the ability to adapt to various roles within Mechanical: former trainees do everything from work as line management on the shop floor to manage shop operations to work in facility or tool design. People and safety of employees and operations are foremost in the mechanical manager's roles. You will be able to apply your "book knowledge" to real world operations and supervision of shop floor employees. Norfolk Southern's Mechanical shops operate on a 24-hour schedule, with many running three shifts to keep the rail industry's best maintained fleet running like a Thoroughbred. A willingness to work shifts as well as weekend and possible holiday work is a must.

Finally, strong computer skills are a necessity. Applicants must also be willing to relocate across the Norfolk Southern system, as NS is geographically spread across the eastern United States. <12-14-06>
